Vol. 277 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Student Nurses.

66.

asked the Minister for Health if he will ensure that qualifications and conditions for enrolment of student nurses will be the same throughout the country regardless of sex or creed.

As Minister for Health, I have functions in relation to student nurses in health board hospitals only. I am satisfied that enrolments are made in these hospitals without regard to the religious convictions of applicants. There is no sex qualification for student nurses. Traditionally, however, it is largely girls who have been attracted to the nursing profession. The opportunities for boys to enrol as student nurses are chiefly in the psychiatric hospitals and in a small number of general hospitals.

I have no function in regard to appointments made by the boards of voluntary hospitals.
