Vol. 277 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin City Traffic.

35.

(Dublin Central) asked the Minister for Local Government if he has any plans to encourage people to leave their cars on the outskirts of the city to ease traffic congestion in the centre of Dublin.

This is a matter for the local authority concerned, acting in consultation with the Garda authorities as may be appropriate in particular cases.

(Dublin Central): Several groups of people have been consulted at various times regarding traffic problems in Dublin but is it not the duty of the Department of Local Government to encourage Dublin Corporation to take some positive steps regarding the relief of traffic congestion in the city?

The elected representatives of Dublin Corporation have the right to do this. Nobody knows better than they what should be done, having taken advice from the experts. Therefore, I think we should leave it to them.

(Dublin Central): Would the Department not encourage the corporation to proceed with some type of positive plan?

They need no encouragement as they are a very intelligent body of men and women.

Perhaps Deputy Briscoe, as chairman of the corporation, would take the matter up with them.
