Vol. 278 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Driving Test Statistics.

40.

(Dublin Central) asked the Minister for Local Government the amount of revenue in driving test fees collected in the year ended March, 1974; and how this figure compares with that for 1973.

The figures are £147,250 for the 12-months' period ended 31st March, 1974, and £84,628 for the preceding 12-months' period.

41.

(Dublin Central) asked the Minister for Local Government the number of (a) driving test centres in Dublin City, (b) driver testers employed for that area and (c) applicants on the waiting list; and if he will state the usual length of time that elapses between the date of application and the date of the test.

(a) 2, (b) 16 normally, (c) 3,000 approximately; 8-10 weeks.

Is not 3,000 an excessive number? Could anything be done to reduce it?

We are doing everything we can—unless we can increase the numbers very substantially.

Do the sensible thing and abolish the driving test altogether. It is only a waste of time.
