Vol. 279 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - White Fish Prices.

29.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the position in relation to guaranteed prices for white fish such as plaice, cod, whiting, sole, brill, and so forth, under the provisions of the EEC Accession Treaty for Ireland.

Fish prices are not guaranteed by the EEC. Withdrawal prices are fixed each year for a number of varieties of white fish, namely, cod, haddock, plaice, saithe and whiting, normally landed by Irish fishermen. When prices fall to the withdrawal level fish may be taken off the market and compensation obtained from the EEC. The withdrawal of fish from market must be undertaken, however, by a Producers' Organisation set up in accordance with EEC regulations. Such an Organisation has not yet been established here but I understand that arrangements for the formation of one on a national basis are now at an advanced stage.
