Vol. 280 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Laois-Offaly Schools.

15.

asked the Minister for Education the schools that will be closed and amalgamated in Counties Laois and Offaly in the next three years.

Mr. R. Burke

It is not possible at this stage to give the names of schools which may be closed in the next three years, as final decisions are taken only after consultation with the local interests concerned. Furthermore, the date of implementation of a decision may be affected by the date of completion of contracts for new central schools or additions to existing schools.

Would the Minister say if he visualises the situation in which there will be a stepping up of the number of closures and the amalgamation of schools due to the fact that teachers will no longer be getting an extension of service beyond 65 years? In many cases amalgamation depends on the retirement of the principal or a teacher in a school. Does the Minister visualise a stepping up?

Is the Deputy stepping outside the subject matter of the question now?

Mr. R. Burke

I am not visualising the situation one way or the other.
