Vol. 280 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fishery Ice Plants.

45.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries why the provision of further ice-producing plants at several fishing ports has not been proceeded with.

I understand from An Bord Iascaigh Mhara that ice plants have been provided at all major ports and landing places where the level of landings so warrant. Consideration is being given by the board to an extension of a number of existing plants to provide for the expanding needs of the ports in question.

While I am aware that BIM installed those ice plants, would the Minister agree with the information given to me by the fishermen, when they were demonstrating here a couple of weeks ago, that the decisions taken by the previous Administration have not been carried out?

I am not so aware. The reply I have is that at any sizeable ports we have those ice plants except that at some of the ports at the moment they are not adequate. Examination is taking place with regard to extending these.
