Vol. 280 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Truck Acts.

58.

asked the Minister for Labour whether, in view of all the recent wage snatches and the general level of remuneration, he will take the necessary steps to amend the Truck Acts so that business firms, after consultation with the trade unions of which their staff are members, may be permitted to pay their employees by cheque or credit transfer.

I believe, for the reasons mentioned by the Deputy, as well as facilitating workers should they wish to be paid by cheque, it would be useful to amend the relevant legislation to enable workers to be paid in whatever way they wish to arrange payment with management. I intend putting forward such an amendment in due course as part of a general review of worker protective legislation, following consultations with the social partners.
