Vol. 280 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meath Estate.

69.

asked the Minister for Lands why the Land Commission terminated proceedings for the acquisition of the Spiritus estate at Rock Lodge, Trim, County Meath, Record No. S.26711, in view of the fact that there is congestion in the area.

(Cavan): The Land Commission terminated their proceedings for the acquisition of this property because all deserving congestion in the locality could be catered for on other lands which had been acquired in the meantime or which were expected to become available within a reasonable time.

I cannot understand how the Minister can say that all the uneconomic holders in the area are satisfied with the land they are going to get. Does this mean a transfer of one down to the Irish Wines estate, Dogstown?

(Cavan): The question of migration arises.

In view of the fact that this land has not been occupied for many years and that it would be beneficial for division in the area, would the Minister consider asking the Land Commission to have another look at it?

(Cavan): My information is that the Land Commission have gone into the matter very fully and that they are satisfied, arising out of lands which they have on hands and lands which they will acquire shortly in connection with the estate mentioned by the Deputy, there is no need for this particular holding and that it would not be proper to acquire it.

Is the land the Land Commission are about to acquire on the same road?

(Cavan): It is in the same vicinity.

Is it a small farm?

(Cavan): It is quite a sizeable farm.

Would there be 200 acres in it?

(Cavan): I do not think there is that amount of land involved but I am told it is adequate.
