asked the Minister for Defence when captains and commandants will receive the 5 per cent increase in salary which was granted to higher executive officers in the civil service from April, 1974.

As I informed Deputy Loughnane on Thursday, 22nd May, a pay increase in line with the civil service increase for executive and higher executive officers has been approved for officers up to and including the rank of commandant. It is expected that payment of the increase will be made at the end of June or early July.
Why has it been so long before the increase was implemented?
Because comparison of ranks in the Army and the civil service has to be done by the Department of the Public Service. There is no question of a commandant or lower rank being paid one day later. They will get all the back money from the same day as the civil servants. It takes a little time, that is all.
