Vol. 281 No. 9

Written Answers. - An Foras Forbartha Superannuation Scheme.

249.

asked the Minister for Local Government when it is proposed to introduce a superannuation scheme in An Foras Forbartha and the guaranteed benefits, if any, that are payable to the estate of any staff member of this body who dies prior to the introduction of a superannuation scheme.

Under its articles of association, An Foras Forbartha is empowered to grant pensions and retiring allowances subject to my approval and with the consent of the Minister for the Public Service. Details of a superannuation scheme have been the subject of discussion between An Foras, my Department and the Department of the Public Service over a considerable time. An Foras have been advised very recently of a text which is acceptable and can be approved straightaway if formally submitted.

The question of benefits for the estate of any staff member of An Foras who dies prior to the introduction of a superannuation scheme would be a matter for An Foras. I understand that An Foras accept liability that, in the event of such a death, benefits would be paid in line with similar benefits in the public service generally.
