Vol. 282 No. 6

Excess Vote, 1972-73. - Vote 4: Central Statistics Office.

Cavan): I move:

That a sum not exceeding £1,757,000 be granted to defray the charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of December, 1975, for the salaries and expenses of the Central Statistics Office.

What is the present position in relation to the household budget survey? Will the Minister indicate if I am correct in my understanding that on the completion of that survey and its processing in the normal way, the basis on which the consumer price index is assessed will be changed in the light of the findings of the survey? If that is so, when may we expect that to occur? I am speaking only of the normal process arising out of such a survey.

(Cavan): The Deputy will appreciate that I am handling these Estimates for the Minister for Finance. He will also appreciate that many wide and general questions are likely to arise. There will be an opportunity of debating these matters if the Deputy wishes on the token Supplementary Estimates but, in the meantime, I will ask the Minister for Finance to communicate with the Deputy.

Vote put and agreed to.
