Vol. 282 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Monaghan Health Hazard.

40.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that a grave hazard to public health exists in Carrickmacross, County Monaghan, because of effluent escaping into open rivers in the area; and the measures that are being taken to correct this situation.

The investigation of specific instances of pollution and the taking of any necessary remedial action are matters for the local authority concerned. I may say, however, that I have fully approved a new sewerage scheme for the town which provides for enlargement and reconstruction of the treatment works at an estimated cost of £180,000. I understand that the scheme is now in construction.

When does the Minister think that that scheme will be completed?

I should not like to estimate that. It depends on so many things but, anyway, it is under way.

Would the Minister agree that there is a very serious case of pollution at Carrickmacross?

There will not be very shortly when this scheme is completed.
