asked the Minister for Local Government the amount of capital requested by Galway County Council for sanitary services in 1975; and the total of the allocation already notified.

The capital allocation for major water and sewerage schemes notified to local authorities, including Galway County Council, on 16th May were related, as were the corresponding allocations in previous years, to expenditure out of loans which had been sanctioned at the date the allocations were notified to the local authorities.

Galway County Council notified my Department in January, 1975 that their requirements in 1975 would be £32,940 in respect of loans sanctioned up to then. I gave the council an allocation of £122,000 to enable draws to be made out of those loans and out of additional loans which I had sanctioned between the date of the council estimate and the date the allocation was notified. In addition, I gave an allocation of £30,000 for small schemes.

In giving their estimate of £32,940 in January, 1975, the county council indicated that they would also hope to get sums totalling £721,144 in respect of loans which in fact had not yet been sanctioned. This was of course premature, and I may add that the overall capital available for sanitary services, although very much greater than that available in 1972-73, is not unlimited.
