Vol. 285 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Museum Policy.

16.

asked the Minister for Education if he will consider introducing a new policy for museums based on the principle of democratisation and decentralisation of the national cultural heritage and formulate proposals to ensure that objects, collections and exhibits will be seen throughout the country in large and small museums with emphasis on increasing the existing capability of the former to radiate beyond their immediate surroundings.

The question of future museum policy is at present under consideration in my Department and it may be taken that the matters referred to by the Deputy will be taken fairly into account in that context.

I raised this matter about two years ago. I had hoped that some progress would have been made. If it is possible to extend the National Gallery to Kilkenny Castle, why is it not possible to make similar extensions to other suitable centres without legislation? If the Minister is having this matter examined, will he be able to give me some sort of answer before another two years elapse.

I will be dealing with that matter on a later question involving Trim and Castlebar.
