Vol. 286 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mail Deliveries.

21.

(Dublin Central) asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he has received complaints of erratic and delayed delivery of mail to provincial centres; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Such complaints are received from time to time and are investigated so that remedial action can be taken. The number is, however, very small. There has been no recent significant change in the incidence of complaint.

(Dublin Central): Would the Minister agree that the erratic delivery of post throughout the country is due to the fact that there is a cutback in overtime in certain centres, especially sorting offices?

I would not agree.

22.

(Dublin Central): asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if there is a cut back in overtime working in his Department; and, if so, whether he considers that this has resulted in delay in deliveries.

Overtime working in the mails service of my Department is kept to a minimum consistent with the maintenance of satisfactory standards of service. I am not aware of any delay to deliveries at present. Some delay did occur recently in the delivery of registered mail as a result of unofficial industrial action by a section of the staff in Dublin.
