Vol. 287 No. 7

Written Answers. - Family Travel.

117.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will consider making regulations for reducing fares for family travel on public or semi-State transport systems in view of the social advantages that would accrue from assisting families to make greater use of the environment not only within the State but by travel within the EEC countries.

The fixing of charges for CIE transport services is, subject to prices legislation, a matter for the board. Aer Lingus fares are settled through IATA machinery and charges for B & I and Irish Continental Line services are a matter for the companies concerned. There is no question, therefore, of making regulations of the type suggested in the Deputy's question. However, I can say from inquiries made that CIE, Aer Lingus, B & I and Irish Continental Line all operate a number of schemes offering reduced travel rates which can be availed of by families.
