asked the Minister for Health if he will state, in respect of each health board, the numbers and grades of administrative and clerical staffs employed as at a current date; and the numbers and grades of similar staffs transferred to the health boards from the respective health authorities on 1st October, 1970.

Existing staffs employed by local authorities on health work were transferred to the health boards with effect from 1st April, 1971, not 1st October, 1970. Direct comparisons between the situation which existed then and that which exists now have been complicated by the introduction, as from April, 1974, of a new grading structure for clerical and administrative staff in health boards and local authorities following agreement with the staff organisation concerned.
The new structure is comprised of seven grades and has been introduced into all health boards with the exception of the Eastern Health Board where its introduction is still being discussed with the staff organisation concerned. Subject to the limitations mentioned above, the information requested by the Deputy is given in three tabular statements which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I will have circulated with the Official Report.
In studying the tables it should be borne in mind that in general, only those engaged wholetime on the health services were transferred to the health boards. Some additional appointments were needed to replace the part-time services of staff which remained with the local authorities. Additional staff was also needed to service new developments since 1971.
