Vol. 291 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fowl Pest.

35.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that UK-produced poultry is on sale in this country; and whether he considers that this creates a danger that fowl pest will spread into this disease-free area.

The only UK-produced poultry on sale here is of Northern Ireland origin. As Northern Ireland is free of fowl pest there is no risk of spreading that disease to our flocks from poultry imported from that source.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary give me an absolute assurance that there is no poultry on the market here that originates in Britain itself?

Not since May, 1975. That was the last time——

Is the Parliamentary Secretary satisfied that we have absolute immunity since the prohibition he referred to in the matter of the introduction of fowl pest?

I am satisfied beyond doubt that we have absolute immunity.
