72.

asked the Minister for the Public Service the paid leave, including annual leave, applicable to each general category of State employee, established and unestablished; and the present weekly rate of each category having additional annual leave at the appropriate point in the salary scale, in the form of a reply of 23rd November, 1971.

The following statement sets out the annual leave of full-time civil servants in the general service grades, in the most numerous grades in the Department of Posts and Telegraphs and in industrial employment. The leave structure of these grades provides a general indication of the leave of other civil service grades. The leave allowances quoted are based on a 5-day working week.

(1) General Service:

15 days, rising to 17 days after 10 years' service

15 days, rising to 18 days after 10 years' service in the grade or on passing the barrier point on the scale provided not less than 5 years' service has been given in the grade

Public Holidays:

Civil servants are allowed the usual Public Holidays. Some of the categories listed above, e.g. industrial employees, are governed by the Holidays (Employees) Act, 1973.

Additional Holidays:

Outside the annual leave allowance, additional days as follows are allowed: To civil servants in category (1): Good Friday, one at Easter and one at Christmas.

To civil servants in category (2): Good Friday.

To those in category (3): One at Christmas. In practice, many employees do not work on Good Friday which is then taken as a day's annual leave.
