The available information relates to the volume index of production for establishments classified to the "Textiles" group, as compiled from the quarterly, now monthly, industrial production inquiry:

The data given above are provisional, and subject to revision in the light of the results of the annual censuses for the years in question.

andMr. Farrell asked the Taoiseach the total number employed in the textile industry in (a) 1974 (b) 1975 and (c) 1976.

The total numbers of persons engaged in establishments classified to the textile industries, for the purposes of the annual census of industrial production, were 22,200 in 1974, 19,300 in 1975 and 19,400 in 1976.

The figures for 1974 and 1975 are averages of the numbers engaged in a week in March, June, September and December while the figure for 1976 is an average of those engaged in a week in March, June and September, which is the latest date for which the information is available. All the figures given are estimates and are subject to revision in the light of the results of the annual censuses for the years in question. The figures cover administrative, clerical and technical staff and industrial workers but they exclude outside piece-workers.
