The annual cost, in terms of pay, allowances, uniform cost and an element of superannuation, of increasing the strength of the force by 2,000 is estimated to be about £11 million at current rates.
Calculation of the capital costs associated with an increase of that size would be extremely difficult since, among other factors, the cost of new premises and of restructuring existing premises would have to be worked out. Moreover, any such calculation would of necessity be largely speculative since the costs involved would depend on decisions in regard to the allocation of the extra strength.
