Vol. 299 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin School.

3.

asked the Minister for Finance when the new primary school at St. Helena's, Finglas, Dublin, will be completed; and when work on the proposed additional unit will commence.

It was hoped that the 16 classroom school now in course of erection at St. Helena's, Rivermount, would be completed by the end of last month. However, inclement weather conditions delayed progress and it is now expected that the school will be completed in about two months' time. The Commissioners of Public Works have received working drawings for a further 16-classroom school and they hope to be able within the next week to authorise the chairman of the board of management to invite tenders. It is yet too early to say when work on this school will commence.

Have the Department of Education told the Parliamentary Secretary of the urgency of the provision of the schools in question?

As the Deputy knows, it is not now necessary to obtain the permission of the Department of Education to authorise invitations to tender.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that in that area there are 1,200 students being ferried to different schools in the city? The situation in that area is different from that existing anywhere else. Would the Parliamentary Secretary ask his officers to proceed with the building of a second school as expeditiously as possible?

I will do that.
