Vol. 299 No. 10

Written Answers. - Energy Policy.

76.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if consideration has been given to the publication of a White Paper on energy policy.

Cavan): The Government's energy policy has been the subject of debate in this House on many occasions over the past four years, most recently in connection with a motion moved by Deputy Barrett during Private Members' Time on 29th March, 1977. As explained on that occasion and as reflected in the motion, as amended and passed by the House on 30th March, our energy policy is aimed at optimum development of the country's natural resources, ensuring adequate and secure supplies of energy at reasonable cost and promoting rational and efficient use of energy, while making adequate provision for the protection of the natural environment. This policy, the constituent elements of which have been outlined from time to time, affords us maximum flexibility to cope with developments in the energy situation at domestic or international level.

The general energy situation is kept under constant review in my Department but the publication of a White Paper as suggested by the Deputy would not, in my opinion, serve any useful purpose at this stage.
