Vol. 300 No. 9

Written Answers. - Clare Factory.

357.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy if he is aware of discontent among the employees in the chipboard factory in Scarriff, County Clare, because of the recent reduction in staff and the fear that the parent company in West Germany will take up production lost in Clare; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I can understand the concern of the workers in the Scarriff chipboard factory. I am not aware of any suggestion that production lost at Scarriff will be taken up by the parent company in Germany. I am advised that the present difficulties are due to a falling-off in demand and a position of over-supply in Western Europe generally. The company are being assisted by Fóir Teoranta in their present difficulties.
