Vol. 302 No. 2

Written Answers. - Antibiotic Residues.

345.

asked the Minister for Health if he is satisfied that there is no danger to public health through antibiotic residues in foodstuffs and milk.

Antibiotic residues in foodstuffs and milk can lead to the development of resistant strains of bacteria in humans. This could cause some difficulty in certain cases if antibiotics to which the bacteria were resistant were prescribed by a doctor in the treatment of an infection.

The problem of the presence of antibiotic residues in food and milk was investigated by the Food Advisory Committee and a report furnished. As a result of their report regulations controlling the sale of antibiotics and other antibacterial substances for use in animal husbandry are at present being prepared by the Minister for Agriculture in consultation with my Department.
