Vol. 302 No. 2

Written Answers. - Fuel Scheme.

368.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he is satisfied with the present operation of the free fuel scheme; and, if not, the measures he proposes to take to improve the scheme.

The fuel scheme has been in operation for many years and continues to confer a worth-while benefit on those who come within its scope. The scheme is a seasonal one and I intend to have it fully reviewed at the end of the present season.

369.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the total cost of the free fuel scheme in 1976; the total number of people who benefited; and the total amount of turf provided.

Expenditure by my Department on the cheap fuel scheme in the year ended 31st December, 1976 was approximately £925,000. This does not include the cost of fuel issued to home assistance recipients which amounted to about £50,000. This sum and the administrative expenses of the scheme were borne by the local authorities concerned. Approximately 46,000 persons benefited under the scheme and some 64,000 tons of turf were provided.
