Vol. 302 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Second Television Service.

15.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if the introduction of RTE 2 will interfere in any way with the quality of reception of those receiving multi-channel reception at present; if any mechanical or technical adjustment to existing sets will be necessary as a result of RTE 2; if so, the cost of such adjustments; and who will pay this cost.

(Dublin South-Central): Technical planning for the second television service has throughout been on the basis of providing the new network as economically as possible and of minimising expense and inconvenience to viewers. In some areas the introduction of the new transmitter network could, if corrective measures were not taken, interfere with existing multi-channel reception. RTE have devoted a considerable amount of effort to identifying the extent of the interference and have taken special steps to minimise it. There will be extended test transmissions from the new transmitters during which any interference experienced will be monitored. RTE will then determine what further steps, if any, need to be taken to deal with any residual problem. The Deputy may be assured that everything possible will be done to avoid the situation to which he refers.

Viewers relying on "off-air" reception, that is those not connected to cable television systems, will in general need to get new aerials or adjust existing aerials and/or television receivers in order to get satisfactory reception of RTE 2. RTE advise that in the great majority of cases the cost to viewers should not be more than £10 to £15. There will be cases, however, where the cost involved may be higher and viewers in some areas will need to change to receivers capable of receiving UHF transmissions or 625 line VHF transmissions. Costs involved will have to be borne by the viewers. I am assured that RTE, in close association with the appropriate trade associations, will provide comprehensive information and advice to viewers.
