Vol. 302 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Crossroads Marking.

19.

asked the Minister for the Environment if lights and markings would be more suitable than the erection of bollards at crossroads in towns, in view of the fact that bollards often constitute a hazard.

There is no general answer to this question. The decision as to whether to provide lights and markings or bollards at a particular location rests with the road authority concerned acting, as appropriate, at the request or with the consent of the Garda Commissioner.

When was consideration last given to the design of this type of street furniture?

That is a separate question.

It relates to it. Would the Minister consider having a look at ideas which have been mooted at various levels in local authorities about this type of traffic indicator? Some local authorities have suggested flexible materials because they would not cause such serious damage as the heavy ironworks. Would the Minister ask his colleague to have a look at that?

Even though it is not strictly relevant, there is a lot of merit and sense in the Deputy's suggestion. I will bring this to the notice of my colleague. Perhaps the Deputy will put down a question on this and there can be a further debate on it.
