Vol. 302 No. 10

Written Answers. - Special Trainee Graduate Teachers.

142.

asked the Minister for Education the number of colleges of education that will be running courses for special trainee graduate teachers; and the number of places on each course.

All the colleges of education are involved in the running of courses for special trainee graduate teachers.

The colleges associated with the NUI are catering for 220 students, the colleges associated with Dublin University for 100 students.

143.

asked the Minister for Education if any of the special trainee graduate teachers have indicated the wish to attend the Church of Ireland Training College, Rathmines, Dublin.

144.

asked the Minister for Education if the special trainee graduate teachers are being allowed to choose which college of education they wish to attend; if he will ensure that any who wish to go to the Church of Ireland Training College, Rathmines, are enabled to do so; and the final date for application for the courses concerned.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 143 and 144 together.

It was stipulated in the letter of 21st November, 1977, issued by my Department to the graduates concerned that they must go to the colleges to which they were assigned. Because of considerations related to entry qualifications and the resources available in the various colleges, it was not possible to offer a choice of college.

None of the applicants requested assignment to the Church of Ireland Training College, Rathmines.

As regards a final date for applications, acceptors were required to take up the places in the colleges on the 1st December, 1977.
