Vol. 303 No. 2

Financial Resolutions, 1978: Financial Statement, Budget, 1978. - Agricultural and fishery co-operatives

This Government have always recognised the importance of the activities of co-operatives in the development of Irish agriculture and fisheries. We gave a commitment to restore an exemption from corporation tax in respect of such activities. A provision will accordingly be included in this year's Finance Bill to exempt certain profits made by these co-operatives as from 1 April next.
Apart from some modifications, the exemption will be similar to that enjoyed by agricultural and fishery co-operatives up to 6 April 1976. The Government are satisfied, however, that the best interests of Irish agriculture and fisheries would not be served by allowing sales to the Intervention Agency to benefit from the exemption.

The Minister will have the farmers and fishermen outside the gate.

(Interruptions.)

The Deputies are em-barrassing their prospective partners.
