Vol. 303 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick Workers' Union Membership.

38.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy if he approves of the recent suggestion of the Managing Director of the IDA that the former Ferenka workers should consider joining a trade union other than the ITGWU and MPGWU in the event of the factory reopening; and if it is the function of the IDA to advise workers on the subject of union membership.

I understand that the managing director of the Industrial Development Authority did not suggest that former Ferenka workers should consider joining a trade union other than the ITGWU and MPGWU in the event of the factory reopening. The IDA do not advise either employers or workers on their choice of trade unions. As I informed the Deputy in reply to another question by him on 15 December 1977, it is the policy of the authority at all times to be strictly impartial between trade unions and not to advise companies about individual trade unions.

Questions Nos. 39 and 40 postponed.
