Vol. 303 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Tipperary Garda Strength.

25.

asked the Minister for Justice the Garda strength in Clonmel, Tipperary town, Cashel, Carrick-on-Suir, and Cahir, County Tipperary at (1) June 1977 and (2) January 1978; and if he has any proposals to allocate additional personnel to these areas.

Garda strength in the towns referred to in the question on 30 June 1977 was as follows:

Clonmel

30

Tipperary

19

Cashel

10

Carrick-on-Suir (including Grange-mockler sub-station)

14

Cahir

15

The strength in these towns on 30 January 1978 remained unchanged except in Clonmel to which an extra garda was assigned on 6 January 1978.

Tipperary and Cashel were each assigned an extra garda on 10 February. In addition, the Garda authorities propose in the near future to assign an extra garda to each of the towns of Carrick-on-Suir and Cahir. They will further consider the needs of all five towns, together with those of other areas, according as additional manpower becomes available for assignment.

26.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will increase Garda foot and car patrols in Clonmel, County Tipperary.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that extra foot patrols have been in operation in the town of Clonmel for the past few months and that it is hoped to maintain the increased level of patrolling. The Garda consider that the present level of mobile patrols is reasonably adequate having regard to overall resources and other commitments.
