Vol. 304 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Manpower Service.

27.

asked the Minister for Labour if he is aware that the National Manpower Service in Dublin is already overstretched; and if he proposes to increase the number of staff employed.

I am well aware of the position. Following a review of the strength of the service after I assumed office I arranged for the Civil Service Commissioners to hold a competition for placement officers. Some of the vacancies in the service were filled from that competition and a new competition is now taking place for at least 16 additional placement officers.

A number of these will be assigned to the Dublin office. Steps are being taken to assign additional support staff also to a number of centres including Dublin.

Is it the Minister's intention to supply even more staff to the National Manpower Service to deal with this work experience programme?

As many as are needed.

How many does the Minister expect that to be?

I cannot say until the details of the scheme are worked out.

When will the details be worked out?

Does soon mean weeks or months?

Question No. 28.

I want to know.

(Interruptions.)

Will the Deputy please resume his seat?
