The preparation of a paper setting out a plan for urban archaeology, which was commissioned by the Government in February, 1977, has been the subject of discussion between representatives of the National Museum, the Office of Public Works and the Department of the Environment. I am not in a position to say precisely when the paper in question will be submitted but I have indicated that I would wish that this be done as soon as possible.
Would the Minister agree it is very important, so that orderly development can take place in urban areas, that there be a plan which identifies important archaeological sites in advance in order that all parties concerned, including developers, will know that a particular area is one requiring special care? Would he take a personal interest in ensuring that this report is brought to a conclusion at the earliest possible date and published?
I have already taken the interest the Deputy requests. I am hoping that, resulting from my interest, the unsatisfactory conditions which have obtained in respect of this and other matters relating to the Museum will be improved at least.
