Vol. 304 No. 3

Written Answers. - County Wicklow Estate Trees.

406.

asked the Minister for Fisheries if he or his Department have issued a tree-felling order for the Fitzwilliam Estate, Coollattin, Shillelagh, County Wicklow; and, if so, the steps he has taken to ensure that the scenic character and tourist potential of the area are not diminished by this order.

The provisions of the Forestry Act, 1946, require that an application for a limited felling licence may not be refused solely for the purpose of preserving amenities unless the district planning authority for the planning district has consented to the refusal.

In accordance with normal practice consultations are taking place with the planning authority.

In the meantime, a licence has issued in respect of thinning of certain crops in accordance with normal silvicultural practice.

407.

asked the Minister for Fisheries if any timber which he may have allowed to be felled on the Fitzwilliam Estate, Coollattin, Shillelagh, County Wicklow, will be further processed in the area, to provide much needed employment locally.

My Department have no powers to compel the processing of timber from private estates in particular locations.
