Vol. 304 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - University Entrance Selection Method.

4.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the unnecessary pressures being put on post-primary leaving certificate and matriculation examiners by the points system being used by university authorities as an entrance selection method; and if he will make a full statement on the matter.

I am not aware that any pressures are being put on post-primary leaving certificate examiners by the "points system" being used by university authorities as an entrance selection method. I do not have responsibility for the matriculation examinations.

The Minister is a little pedantic.

The Minister knows full well the real intent of my question.

I am not here to teach people spelling.

Nor are we here to teach people reading.

I would like to ask the Leader of the Opposition what exactly he means by that.

I am calling Question No. 5.

Too much is being made of a genuine misunderstanding.

I put down the question for the Minister's edification.

I would be delighted to answer the question if I had been asked about examinees because I have a special interest in that question.

That is what the question referred to.

I want to make it quite clear to the House that I got my officials to examine this carefully because I thought it might refer to examinees. I have no doubt in my mind—and I got several people to read the question—that the word "examiners" appeared on the question as it was put to me.

No problem.
