Vol. 304 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - North Dublin Post-Primary Schools.

18.

asked the Minister for Education the new post-primary schools that are planned for the northern part of Dublin city and suburbs; the type of schools that are involved; where and when they will be provided; and the number of pupil places in each.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to have the information sought by the Deputy circulated in the form of a tabular statement with the Official Report.

Is the Minister satisfied that the number of school places which may or may not be provided in the north city will be enough to cope with any possible eventuality arising out of the situation we have been discussing?

I appreciate the Deputy's concern and I can assure him that whatever addenda must be made to schools, if necessary, then they will be made to cope with the pupils he has referred to.

Is the Minister aware that almost all the existing schools in the northern part of the city are already bursting with pupils and that any further closures or throwing of pupils on the educational market would seriously jeopardise his plans for the area?

When the Deputy reads the tabular statement he will see that there is very extensive provision for new places in the north city area.

The parents are not reassured yet.

I am trying to reassure them. I am doing by best and they will have to take my word for that.

The Minister would need to do a bit better.

The people will have to take my word that I am doing my best and I regard my word in matters of education as my bond. I am not being complacent about it.
