Vol. 304 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Schools Survey.

16.

asked the Minister for Education if he has recently received a survey carried out by primary school management authorities into the remedial situation in national schools; the main findings of such a survey; if he accepts the findings; and the action he proposes to take on the matter.

I have recently received a summary of the findings of a survey carried out by the Teaching Brothers' Association and the Association of Primary Teaching Sisters in a number of schools conducted by members of these associations. I have asked for a copy of the actual survey and for details of scientific evidence which the associations may have to offer as a basis for their findings. Pending the receipt of this information I am not in a position to comment on the matter.

When the Minister gets the final survey will he take steps to have it evaluated urgently in his Department? If he accepts the conclusions, will he take urgent action to remedy the situation they describe?

That is a series of hypothetical questions. If the Deputy puts down real questions when the time comes, I will endeavour to answer them as best I can.

Has the Minister enough evidence to date to convince him that there is at least some substance in the findings of the organisations as reported in the newspapers? Is he concerned about this?

I am waiting for the proper report. I think this is a wise thing to do. The Deputy, who has considerable experience in educational journalism, will agree that it is wise to wait for the full report.

Does the Minister feel any concern about this?
