Vol. 304 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Royal Hospital, Kilmainham.

27.

asked the Minister for Finance the present position regarding the renovation of the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham, Dublin; and if it is intended to reopen it as a folk museum.

The first stage of the restoration of the Royal Hospital building, which consisted of the elimination of dry rot and the restoration of the fabric in the north wing, was completed some years ago.

Planning for the restoration of the remainder of the building is now at an advanced stage and it is hoped that it may be possible to make a start on this work next year.

The use to which the building will be put has not yet been finally decided.

In connection with the Royal Hospital, could the Minister indicate if the Government have finalised any proposals for the folk museum that was linked with the restoration of that hospital?

Not as yet, but I am giving the matter my urgent attention.

Could the Minister give any indication when a decision can be expected to be reached.

I hope that we will complete the work early in the new year.

Could the Minister state if any money has been allocated this year for the work? We are going to tender at the end of the year.

No, we are going to tender this year.

How is it possible to decide on the type of renovation to be carried out on a building without knowing what the building is to be used for?

We have quite a number of suggestions and I would appreciate suggestions from any Deputy in the House in regard to the use of the building.

I am sure the House appreciates that offer, but how can one decide on the type of renovation without knowing to what use the building is to be put?

That is another question.

That is a separate question. Question No. 28.
