Vol. 304 No. 10

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

343.

asked the Minister for the Environment when he received from Kildare County Council the proposal to improve the water supply in the Kill/Johnstown area; the number of houses to be served by the scheme immediately; its ultimate maximum capacity; and when he expects to approve it.

Contract documents for this section of the Kildare mid-regional water supply were submitted to my Department in January 1976. Approval was given in August 1976 for stage 1 of the scheme to improve pressures in the Naas area. This work is completed but in view of the need to conserve the available capital for the water and sewerage schemes of highest priority, I cannot say when I will be in a position to approve the balance of the scheme. The scheme as designed is capable of supplying approximately 624,000 gallons of water per day to meet the domestic requirements of some 1,600 houses together with the agricultural and industrial demands of the area.

asked the Minister for the Environment when he expects to approve Stage two of Naas Urban District sewerage scheme as submitted to him by the local council; the area and number of houses to be covered (1) immediately; and (2) when the scheme is at maximum capacity; and when the proposal was received by him.

Having regard to the fact that my Department is at present processing a loan application for £160,000 to finance the construction of stage 1 of the Naas sewerage distribution system scheme and the need to conserve the capital available for the water and sewerage schemes of highest priority, I cannot say when I will be in a position to approve the contract documents for stage 2 which were received in my Department in September 1976.

Stage 2 is designed to provide drainage facilities for 252 hectares on the Monread side of Naas and to take the sewage flow from approximately 1,500 houses. I have asked the local authority to confirm direct to the Deputy the number of houses to be served immediately.
