Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cosmetics and Hair Dyes.

37.

asked the Minister for Health how the sale of cosmetics and hair dyes that may contain cancer-causing chemicals is regulated in this country.

The sale of cosmetic products as such is not at present subject to statutory control.

The Council of the European Economic Community has adopted a directive on the approximation of the laws of member states relating to cosmetic products. The directive provides that such products put on the market must not be liable to cause damage to human health when applied under normal conditions of use and obliges member states to prohibit the marketing of cosmetic products containing specified substances. Draft Regulations to give effect to the directive in this country have been referred to the pharmaceutical industry for consideration.
