asked the Minister for Social Welfare in respect of the latest date for which figures are available, (a) the number of women in receipt of deserted wives allowance, (b) the total number of dependent children of such persons and (c) the number of applications for deserted wives allowances not granted, on the grounds that the applicant had adequate means.

At 21 April 1978 there were 2,989 women in receipt of deserted wife's allowance and the number of dependent children of such persons was 4,140. A total of 360 applications had been disallowed up to that date on the ground that means were in excess of the statutory limit.
