Vol. 306 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ban-Gharda Uniform

8.

asked the Minister for Justice if there are any plans to have the Ban-Gharda uniform redesigned; and, if so, if he will consider the incorporation of slacks into the new design.

The re-design of the Ban-Gharda uniform is being considered by a working party consisting of representatives of the Garda Síochána, including ban-ghardaí and ban sergeants, and the Department of Justice and the Public Service. Designers have been invited to submit sketches and proposals for the new uniform, and these are expected within the next few weeks. The question of including slacks in the new uniform is one of the matters to be considered.

Having regard to the various types of boots and shoes worn by ban-ghardaí particularly during inclement weather, would there not be a far greater uniformity of appearance if slacks were worn and also would this form of attire not be more suitable in the event of ban-ghardaí being involved in riots?

This is a dangerous area for a male chauvinist pig.

The Minister for Fisheries should stay out of this.

The Deputy will appreciate the wisdom of my predecessor in referring this very delicate matter to a committee for examination. Personally I would have no objection to the ban-ghardaí wearing slacks.

The Minister would not regard them as a cover up for the gardaí?

Deputy Belton has great courage.
