Vol. 307 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions . Oral Answers . - Alleged Doping of Dogs .

29.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is satisfied that Bord na gCon have taken all necessary precautions regarding the alleged doping of dogs; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

: The taking of precautions against the doping of dogs is entirely a matter for Bord na gCon and I am satisfied that they are dealing adequately with this matter.

: Could the Minister say how many on-the-spot checks were taken on dogs on provincial tracks in the last 12 months?

: I have no information as regards on-the-spot checks taken last year or indeed any other year but, of course, under existing legislation authorised officers are empowered to take tests at any time on the tracks if they are suspicious that any animal has been doped.

: The plain fact is that the Board are not taking any action in the matter as far as the provincial tracks are concerned. It is a matter of great concern to genuine owners in the industry. I implore the Minister to take the necessary steps to ensure these tests are made on provincial tracks.

: If there are any complaints officers are authorised under existing legislation to carry out any tests deemed necessary.

: Could the Minister say how many tests were taken in the last 12 months?

: I have not that information.

: What kind of brief have you? There are no tests being taken. People are being conned.
