asked the Minister for Finance if he will supply a list of the projects in Ireland which have received finance under the Regional Development Fund of the European Community, together with the amounts received by each of these projects in the various years in which the fund has existed.

: The European Regional Development Fund was established in March 1975 and the first projects were approved for fund assistance later that year. A total of 267 investment projects throughout the country and one study project have been approved for assistance to date. I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate with the Official Report a list of these projects, broken down by category of project and the year of approval for fund aid.
In relation to the second part of the question, I should explain that it has not been the practice to give figures for fund aid for individual projects. Applications for fund assistance in respect of individual projects costing less than ten million units of account (£4.17 million) are, in accordance with article 7 of the fund regulation, submitted on a grouped basis for the country as a unit and the Commission determines a single aggregate aid figure for the grouped application. Accordingly, it is not feasible to specify the amount of fund aid approved or paid in respect of individual projects in this category which accounts for the vast bulk of the projects approved for fund aid in Ireland. Moreover, as the Deputy is probably aware, fund aid in respect of approved projects— whether above or below ten million units of account—is not used to "top up" the national aid already given to individual projects. Instead, it is applied at present to the financing of increases in certain services under the public capital programme and is expended as an integral part of that programme. However, the figures for the overall amounts of fund aid approved and received in the various years are included at the end of the list of projects which I am circulating.
