Vol. 308 No. 1

An Bille um Údarás na Gaeltachta, 1978: Ordú don Dara Céim. - Joint Committee on the Secondary Legislation of the European Communities: Motion.

I move:

That, in the period ending 31 December 1978, notwithstanding anything in Standing Orders and unless the Dáil shall otherwise order, if the Joint Committee on the Secondary Legislation of the European Communities lays before the Dáil a report containing a request for a debate thereon, one hour and a half shall be set aside for debate on a motion, That Dáil Éireann takes note of such Report, on such day, not later than 21 days after the day on which the Report shall have been laid before the Dáil, and at such time, as shall be announced on the Order of Business for that day, as the Taoiseach shall determine; provided that where a division has been demanded on the motion the Ceann Comhairle shall postpone the taking of the division until 8.30 p.m. on the next Wednesday on which the Dáil shall sit until that hour.

May I, as chairman of the joint committee, welcome this motion. The joint committee approached the Committee on Procedure and Privileges to seek an agreement whereby reports of the joint committee on the more important EEC proposals could be discussed in the House. This motion is the outcome of that approach. The committee are satisfied with this outcome. We also agree that it was reasonable that the arrangements now being entered into should be reviewed at the end of 12 months.

Question put and agreed to.
