The statistical information requested by the Deputy in so far as it is available is set out below.
It is not possible to furnish information regarding the staffing of each maternity unit as where the units are located in general or district hospitals some of the staff only devote part of their time to the maternity unit. Furthermore, the information is not available in respect of private hospitals and homes.
There are no identifiable catchment areas for maternity units as generally patients are free to choose between a number of hospitals or homes. It is not possible to answer the Deputy's query regarding the units continuing in existence as many of them are privately owned.
It is accepted that maternity services should be available for all expectant mothers. The organisation and development of maternity services in each health board area are determined in the light of identified requirements. In the programme of general hospital development at present being implemented provision is made for maternity units in the planning of the hospitals except in relation to the Dublin area and also, to some extent, in Cork, where the specialised maternity hospitals generally provide the service.
