Vol. 308 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Donegal Pier.

14.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he is aware of the dire need for improvements to Port-na-Blagh pier, County Donegal; and if there are any proposals to rectify the situation.

The marine facilities at Port-na-Blagh are at present under examination by my Department in consultation with the Office of Public Works to determine if new works are required in the interest of the local fishermen.

State grants have been sanctioned for the provision of leading lights and day markers and arrangements made to have the work carried out.

Am I correct in assuming that the money being provided is for lights and markers solely? That is all that has yet been decided?

That is right.

Is there any hope that anything more useful and substantial is even in prospect of examination regarding the pier and facilities generally?

An estimate is being made in regard to the construction of a breakwater which would cost about £80,000. That is being considered at present as to whether it will make the harbour safe. The question of how effective that expenditure can be is being examined.

What money has been allocated from the small improvements the Minister mentioned?

Any talk locally of a very much larger figure is pure speculation at this stage?

It is, yes.
