Vol. 309 No. 3

Written Answers. - Consumer Protection.

76.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy the new legislative measures it is proposed to introduce in the field of consumer protection.

443.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy the specific measures introduced by him since assuming office in the field of consumer protection.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 76 and 443 together.

Since I assumed office the Consumer Information Act, 1978, has been enacted. This is the first of two major measures arising from recommendations made by the National Consumer Advisory Council.

The second major measure deriving from these recommendations is the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Bill for which, as Deputies are aware, the House today ordered a Second Reading.

A new Weights and Measures Bill is in preparation and a Bill on consumer credit is also in hands, but for it the timing will be influenced by an EEC directive on that subject which is at present being prepared.

Though not primarily introduced from a consumer protection point of view, the Industrial and Provident Societies (Amendment) Bill at present before the Oireachtas has in it substantial elements of consumer protection.
