I am not clear as to the precise meaning of the term "standards" as used in the question. Under the Consumer Information Act, 1978, extensive powers are available both to me and to the Director of Consumer Affairs to deal with misleading advertising practices. Controls may also be applied to advertising in specific areas by me or by other Ministers. The Deputy is perhaps aware, too, of the voluntary controls operated by the advertising interests themselves through the Advertising Standards Committee.
